POSEIDON: POwer StoragE In D OceaN

POSEIDON main objective is to demonstrate the applicability of 3 innovative fast-response ESS in waterborne transport (Supercapacitors, Flywheels and SMES) addressing their on-board integration, cost-competitiveness, efficiency and safety, in relevant environments. At CERN, the MSC group has a wide experience in superconducting materials (both LTS and HTS). The contribution of CERN to the Poseidon project is on the superconducting SMES activity and it will consist in:
1)    Participating in the selection of the superconducting material to be adopted for the SMES;
2)    Measuring properties of the selected superconducting material at cryogenic temperature;
3)    Measuring the electrical performance of a modular superconducting coil at liquid helium temperature - in a dedicated test station at CERN.
